Our History

Marquip, Inc. was founded in 1968 as a manufacturer of custom-designed automated machinery for the building materials industry. In a very modest facility, one-of-a-kind machines were designed and manufactured for the production of hardboard siding, ceiling tile, particle board, plywood, aluminum and other flat materials.

The first office and manufacturing building was constructed in 1969. In this 5,000-square-foot space, customers' problems were solved with the development of innovative mechanical designs and sophisticated electronic controls. As both this facility and the number of dedicated employees grew, so did the list of major innovations for which Marquip is credited. Among these developments are: Tailgrab Splicing in 1976, the "Non-Windowing" Cut-to-Mark System in 1986 and the Beltless Double Backer in 1996.

With so many technical advancements in high-speed corrugating and sheeting machinery, it was only a matter of time before Marquip's expertise led to international customers. As international sales increased, so did the need for an overseas facility. In 1987, Marquip International was established in Frankfurt, West Germany, which enabled a rapid expansion in Europe. This continued growth led to the opening of branch offices in Barcelona, Spain; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Zurich, Switzerland. Other ventures into global economics include the Pacific Rim branches located in Sydney, Australia; Seoul, Korea; and Hsin Chu City, Taiwan.

In October 2000, Barry-Wehmiller Companies, Inc. acquired Marquip. This move added sophisticated corrugated equipment technology to the extensive Barry-Wehmiller product line, strengthening Barry-Wehmiller's position in the global marketplace and enhancing its single-source capabilities in the fragmented packaging industry.

Ward Machinery Company, a world-class Baltimore-based manufacturer of finishing equipment, was merged with Marquip in April 2002. Ward Machinery was founded in 1962 by William F. Ward, Sr., who created the world's first modern rotary die cutter-the primary die cutting method for corrugated boxes. With a customer base that spans six continents and a reputation for developing innovative and technologically advanced solutions, the Ward Machinery brand is synonymous with strength.

In July 2002, Barry-Wehmiller completed the acquisition of United Container Machinery, a leading manufacturer of corrugating and converting machinery also based in Baltimore and founded in 1898. The addition of United's wet end and finishing products to MarquipWard's dry end and finishing products enabled the merged company to meet the needs of the corrugating industry with a comprehensive range of solutions.

Combining more than a century of experience, the fusion of Marquip, Ward and United to form MarquipWardUnited created one of the world's largest global suppliers of high-speed equipment for the corrugated paperboard and folding carton industries.
